Living in Orting, WA: A Local’s Guide to Life in the Shadow of Mount Rainier

By James Nelson · Real Estate Broker & Mortgage Loan Officer

I live and work in Orting, and I’m a little biased: there aren’t many places where you can step outside and see Mount Rainier this close. If you’re thinking about moving here, here’s a local’s look at what life in Orting is like.

Small-town feel, big mountain views

Orting sits in a valley in eastern Pierce County, where the Carbon and Puyallup rivers come together. The town has kept its small-town character, with a central park, local shops, and neighbors who wave. On a clear day, Mount Rainier fills the sky in a way that never gets old.

The Foothills Trail

One of Orting’s best features is the Foothills Trail, a paved path built on an old rail line. It runs right through town and out along the rivers, with mountain views the whole way. It’s popular for walking, running, biking, and strollers, and it’s a big part of daily life here.

Community traditions

Orting is one of the four cities on the route of the Pierce County Daffodil Parade each spring, along with Tacoma, Puyallup, and Sumner, and the town comes out in force. Summer brings community events in the park, and the holidays bring a real hometown feel.

Getting around

Orting is a bedroom community, so many residents commute toward Puyallup, Tacoma, and the I-5 corridor, including Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Commute times vary a lot with traffic, so test-drive your route at rush hour before you buy.

Homes in Orting

You’ll find a mix of newer subdivisions, established neighborhoods, and homes with more space as you head out of town. Orting tends to draw families, first-time buyers, and people who want more home and more outdoors for their money than closer-in cities.

Know the lahar plan

Orting is in a Mount Rainier lahar hazard zone. The city and county have warning sirens, evacuation routes, and regular drills, and schools practice too. It’s a fact of life here that residents take seriously and plan for. If you’re buying, learn the evacuation routes and sign up for local alerts through Pierce County Emergency Management.
